Residential Grading
Landscaping
Residential grading is a necessity when it comes to a few things. Whether you’re needing footings for your house, a quality landscape, or if you decided to be one of the wild ones that purchased a lot on the side of a steep hill, residential grading is a first major step.
But whether you’re landscaping rocks, or you just need a better pathway up to your house, we’ve got you covered. Yes, we have the heavy equipment necessary to get the job done for all your residential grading needs. Whether it’s a front end loader, a dozer, or a backhoe, we’ll come in with the machinery that takes care of the job. But, why is residential grading so important when it comes to landscaping anyway? you may be asking yourself. Well, let’s give you an example here.
Why your landscape needs residential grading
Take for instance this. You hire some landscapers, maybe even a few general contractors. They do a great job! You have a lovely new landscape! But, then after only a couple seasons, you notice your trees and bushes going south. After some more in-depth research, you find out there are rocks in your soil. Those rocks are cutting off the water supply to your greenery. (Oops!)
You give us a call, we provide you with a free estimate, you’re pleased and say “I’m in!” Maybe we bring out a land surveyor, break out our skilled landscaping services (the services you didn’t know you needed prior to the planting), you scratch your head and think Man…This all would have been a lot easier if I did it this way the first time.
But, in the end, what will you have? (After your landscape design is all complete of course. And by this point, you may want to just do it yourself. In that case, check these guys out.) You’ll have a yard that won’t break! Why? Because you took good care of the earth beneath first! (Signal applause.)
So, there you have it. The importance of grading when it comes to your residential landscaping. They go together like peas and carrots.
Rough Grading vs. Fine Grading
So, now that you understand the importance of grading when it comes to landscaping, let’s fill you in a bit more on what it actually consists of, shall we?
There are essentially two forms of grading. Rough grading and final grading (or fine grading). I’m sure you were able to guess the definitions of each, but let’s help you understand them with clarity, cool?
Rough Grading
The rough grading process is that which is completed on a large scale over a large area prior to preliminary grading, and which when completed is within two vertical feet of the site’s final grade elevations. So, there you have it! The rough grading definition.
Now, if you’re realizing, Wait a second. I just purchased some property. That’s the step I’ve got to take before putting a house on it! But, what’s the cost going to be? then you have again come to the right place. Rough grading cost, like anything, varies. That’s why you can always give us a call at (760) 247-8741 to talk about a free estimate. We’ll touch base on rough grading specification, the rough grading plan, etc. Fair enough? We know out here in the High Desert it can be some pretty rough country at times. Which is why we understand that no two lots are the same. So, we treat your latest project with care and consideration, knowing it’s as unique as all the hills and valleys of the good ol’ Hi-Desert.

Fine Grading
Yep! You guessed it. Grading is oftentimes a two-fer. Final grading is obviously the finishing touch. If we left you with a site whose residential grading was only rough, then you would have a tough time looking at it, let alone wanting to put a house on it. After the heavy duty grade, you’ll need a smoother touch. That’s when the final grade comes into play. It is an important piece to the task.
SCDOT.org defined fine grading as “the work necessary to bring the subgrade material into the final shape and compacted condition prescribed in the contract documents.”
So wherewith we can talk technicalities all day such as grading of fine and coarse aggregates, the difference between a dozer and a backhoe, and all sorts of unnecessary grading talk, let’s just leave it at this. In the end, rough grading and fine grading are both equally important parts to your residential grading needs.
And whereas we just swore off talking about grading of fine aggregate and other fun-to-us conversations, let’s move on to tell you more about why you might be here in the first place.
